This month’s Salon of Distinction comes in from the great states of Tennessee and Northern Mississippi. A quick link on Google Maps pegs their headquarters at just under 800 miles from the IST offices. So, here’s a warm ist Magazine greeting to Tan-N-Go! I had the opportunity to catch up with Micah Zeuner, General Manager, for a brief interview.
What have been the keys to the success of Tan-N-Go?
Without sharing company intel, Micah noted that having worked in the indoor tanning industry for almost 20 years, she feels that staff training and building client relationships must be the top priorities for affirming client loyalty, as well as employee retention. “This isn’t anything new for us or any business; however, putting these things first can be a challenge. Daily operations can easily distract us and keep us from focusing on the goals at hand. At Tan-N-Go, we work hard to create a positive, professional work environment to develop and grow passion and productivity amongst our staff. We want our salon guests to know that they are our No. 1 priority, and we do this by empowering our staff with the knowledge and resources they need to take ownership of keeping our customers and growing the business.” What do you see as the greatest obstacle facing our industry?
“Joe, the greatest obstacle in front of us is the need to create a positive image of indoor tanning and gain the support of public opinion. The majority of information given through media has been and still is very negative, and has given the average person the impression that UV tanning has little to no benefit,” said Zeuner. She quickly referenced the “look good, feel good” mantra that our industry should be touting on. She explained: “Promoting the message of looking great through moderate tanning with skin-typing can be overshadowed by UV negativity, even when the research doesn’t back up those claims.” You recently took some of the online modules offered in the Sun is Life® Training and Certification program. What is your impression of the learning system?
“Sun is Life Training is a perfect tool to train and motivate staff; fitting right in with our vision,” said Zeuner. Michelle Wolfe, Corporate Trainer for Tan-N-Go also added, “Sun is Life Training and Certification is top notch. The visuals, videos, and topics are not only relatable to real life on the salon level, but it also provides a professional and energetic quality that will not only excite a brand new employee, but also inspire even the most seasoned staff.”
Micah and Michelle, IST thanks you for your time and we want to pass on congrats to the entire Tan-N-Go team. All the best for a successful 2016!
