For years, ist Magazine has highlighted the efforts of hard-working salon owners across the country; but, there’s more than one way to get a tan. Currently, there are many “sunless-only” salons whose owners are doing their part to help keep America bronzed and beautiful. In this occasional series, we endeavor to see how “the other half” lives… and goes about the business of delivering tanned skin to those who seek it.
After working at a tanning salon for nearly 10 years, Brenda Wooley was inspired to open her sunless-only salon, Sun Kissed by Brenda. “I knew it would be a challenge to introduce something like this in our small town, but I wanted to provide an option for those who can’t or won’t use UV tanning,” said Brenda. “Plus, I had always dreamed of having my own business, and it was the right time.”
To ensure her success, Brenda got training in all things sunless tanning, and education continues to play an important role at the salon. “I believe in education for ourselves and our clients, which they appreciate because we help them to get the best results from their sunless sessions,” she said. “This focus on the customer experience has helped transform many of the event-based tanners into long-term clients who stop in once a week for their spray-tan. We also stay involved in community events, like the Relay for Life, to help promote a positive image of our salon and the tanning industry.”
After opening Sun Kissed by Brenda, she and her sister Elizabeth Arellano began serving roughly 200 clients per week.
Thanks for taking the time to meet Brenda Wooley of Sun Kissed by Brenda. In the months to come, we’ll introduce other sunless-only entrepreneurs and highlight their unique takes on the tanning biz. After all, we’re all in this together!
