Be Prepared… Robberies DO Happen

Unfortunately, break-ins and robberies occur frequently these days, and small businesses are often targets. Many times, after the burglar breaks into a tanning salon, they realize there isn’t much cash to steal, but the damage is already done. Broken doors, damage to the reception area, and vandalism are costly repairs that need to be fixed immediately, since they are at the point of first contact for your guests. Keep these crime prevention tips in mind, not only when you close your salon, but during all business hours.

Burglars want easy access.

  • Install additional locks on doors and windows to slow down their path.
  • Install (and use) a central station alarm system: setting the alarm needs to be part of the opening and closing procedures.

Leave some lights on.

  • Lighting in the facility at night could deter a burglar.
  • Add censored night lighting.

Befriend your neighbors.

  • Nosy neighbors can be a burglar’s worst enemy! Keep an eye on businesses in the area and hopefully, they’ll do the same for you.
  • Contact the police if you notice suspicious behavior at neighboring businesses.
  • Let neighbors know if you’re expecting any deliveries at unusual hours.

Keep landscaping well groomed.

  • You may need to contact your landlord to handle this, but it’s a good idea to make sure all trees and shrubs are trimmed near doors and windows where intruders might hide.

Be careful with “announcements” in the salon.

  • Don’t announce how it’s “busy season” and that you have so much cash in your drawer.
  • Don’t announce that you need to stop by the bank.
  • Keep these crime prevention tips in mind, not only when you close your salon, but during all business hours.

Mind your salon keys.

  • Don’t hide a set of keys at the salon’s front door.
  • Keep keys in a safe place outside of the salon where you or your manager can find them.

Store valuables safely.

  • Keep cash levels low – it should be deposited daily or locked in a safe.
  • Other valuables should also be locked in a safe or taken home every night.
  • Valuables should be photographed and inventoried annually; remember to mark items for identification and keep records in a secure location.

If a robbery occurs during business hours, instruct your staff to:

  • Stay calm.
  • Cooperate with the intruder and try to comply with requests.
  • Don’t try to be the hero or be confrontational.
  • Contact 9-1-1 as soon as possible.
  • A hand-held “panic button” device should be kept at the front counter and all staff made aware of how and when to use it.

These are just a few tips that can reduce the chances that your business will be the victim of a crime. If you’d like additional tips or have questions, feel free to contact Universal Insurance.
