This is an old saying and like many old sayings, there is much truth and a big lesson to learn if you spend the time to figure it out.
Right about now, most salons are or will be heading into the slowest part of the season. Only two things can happen as this occurs. One thing is having a “Woe is me” attitude, complaining about how business sucks and how the industry is going down the tubes like you-know-what through a goose. You’re doing nothing at all to maximize the value of the clients you have NOW and making NO plans for the upcoming busy season.
The other of the two things that happen is – and your appropriate response would be, of course, “just the opposite” – you maximize the value of every living, breathing customer walking through your door NOW! You create a plan to have a more consistent flow of clients lining up to give you their money all year long.
Most of the marketing systems and secrets that I teach my students and clients are designed to put money in your bank account very fast. I mean fast – like the money is in the bank almost before the check you wrote to pay for the marketing campaign clears.
The best, most effective marketing is seldom the result of a one-time event. It is a process – a very well planned, detailed and timed series of events that creates a reliable system for consistent revenue.
Part of that reliable system is doing the correct things NOW so that you will prosper soon in the future, as well.
For example, all tanning salons need a steady flow of new customers all year long. During the busy season, it’s relatively easy to get new clients since that is when most people are looking to get a tan. Many salon operators, though, make the mistake of completely turning off their new customer marketing during the slower season. This is a big mistake, since you always should be attracting new customers.
Another mistake is not having an effective referral system. Your best new clients often come to you as a referral from an existing customer. A referred customer is the second easiest person to sell to since they’ve been referred, which is an endorsement of your business, by someone whom they know and trust.
Lastly for this month: having a highly effective EFT membership program is the easiest way to create consistent, repeatable revenue for your salon every month. It literally builds a fence around your customers and keeps them in your salon and spending their tanning money only with you.
